The
Lane County Historical Museum is a doorway into Lane County’s
fascinating past and a bridge to our communal identity
in the present. Our current featured exhibit is “Law Enforcement
in Lane County: The Human Face of Policing” which will run
through September 2006. This exhibit will be accompanied by regular
public programs; for the program schedule, see the museum newsletter
on our web site.
Visit
us near the Lane County Fairgrounds and see an Oregon Trail
covered wagon of 1850, Oregon-California stagecoach, and a 1908
Model T Ford. Other exhibits include a Victorian parlor, a pioneer
living room and kitchen, clothing from the 1920s and 1930s, displays
of early logging and blacksmithing equipment, and tools and household
implements used by Native Americans and early settlers.
Trained
guides can provide tours for pre-school and school groups,
and the museum also offers a series of prepared slide shows on various
historic topics.
The
museum also houses an archives and research library. Use
of the library and archives is by appointment and the research fee
is modest. Our collections include diaries and correspondence of
early Lane County families, early business and organization records,
maps, blueprints of historic buildings, some genealogical material,
and an extensive collection of historic photographs of Lane County.
The
Museum Gift Shop features period children’s toys,
books, cards and prints of historical interest. The shop stocks
back issues of the Lane County Historian. Visitors may also purchase
archival supplies for use with their own family records.
